Chadema, CUF plead for peaceful Oct 25 elections

Regina Lowassa speaking at Bwawani Hotel, Zanzibar.

WIVES of Chadema and Civic United Front Union and Zanzibar presidential candidates have joined calls for the holding of peaceful elections.

Speaking during a joint meeting held at Bwawani Hotel here, Ms Regina Lowassa and Ms Awena Sinani, wife of CUF Zanzibar presidential aspirant Seif Sharif Hamad, said that women must spread the message of peaceful elections across the Mainland and Zanzibar.

They said women supporters of the Coalition of Four Opposition Political Parties (Ukawa) must ensure that Mr Lowassa and Mr Hamad are voted into powers as presidents of the Union and Zanzibar respectively.

“Let’s conduct the campaigns peacefully while knowing that every Tanzanian in both the Mainland and Zanzibar must put the nation first ahead of everything. We must all ensure that the elections are free, fair and peaceful environment,” Ms Lowassa said. She said acts of violence will hamper the country’s development where women, children and the disabled would experience much suffering. “Let each of us all strive for peace in the upcoming elections,” she emphasised.

Ms Awena also said that peace is a prerequisite for democracy to blossom and that Tanzanians should draw lessons of what is happening in some parts of Africa and the Middle East.

Their calls were echoed by their husbands during campaign rallies in Pemba and Unguja. Both presidential aspirants spit fire about police brutality against their supporters. “We need fair treatment from security forces because our followers have been behaving well.

Police use excessive force against our supporters,” Mr Hamad said, dismissing claims that Ukawa supporters plan to cause chaos during election day.

Mr Lowassa said he needs to win the upcoming elections under peaceful atmosphere, promising speedy development and assisting vulnerable groups -- children, youth and women.
