Hundreds of mourners pay tribute to fallen MP!

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete yesterday led hundreds of mourners to pay last respects to the late Deo Filikunjombe, the former Ludewa Member of Parliament (MP) at Lugalo Barracks Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

The body of Mr Filikunjombe, who died in a helicopter crash in the middle of the Selous Game Reserve on Thursday evening, was then transported to his residence in Mtoni Kijichi area in Temeke District, where a mass was held before his body was airlifted to Ludewa for burial scheduled for today.

Delivering a eulogy on behalf of the opposition, Kigoma South constituency candidate on the ticket of NCCR-Mageuzi, Mr David Kafulila, said that the nation has lost an exemplary legislator.

“The late Filikunjombe was one of a kind of MP who stood firm in the fight against corruption without regard to the stance of his own party, I am not saying this because I am from the opposition, but he did this because this is what he believed in,” he said.

Mr Kafulila said that he would like to see people of the calibre of the deceased in the forthcoming National Assembly and that the late Filikunjombe always stood for things that are of national interest.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr Bernard Membe, said that the late Filikunjombe partook fully in the negotiation process between Tanzania and Malawi over ownership of Lake Nyasa and was very vocal in the House in reminding the government of its duties.

Mr Membe also used the opportunity to extend the government’s condolences to the family of Captain William Silaa who also perished in the ill fated helicopter. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Anne Makinda, in her message of condolences on behalf of Parliament said that the late Filikunjombe was an example to be emulated by all youth and that in spite of being an MP for only five years, the things he had done one could easily mistake him for having been there for 20 years plus.

“The death of Filikunjombe is a huge loss to CCM especially when you take into account that within a span of one month, the party has lost four MPs, but I will leave that in the hands of God,” she said.
