CCM Presidential candidate Dr John Magufuli yesterday wondered why Tanzanians continue to wear second-hand clothes (popularly known as Mitumba), while the country is one of the leading producers of cotton.

Addressing a campaign rally in Magu Constituency in Mwanza Region, Dr Magufuli assured people in the area that if he wins the election, his government will give priority to cotton as well as offer competitive price on the crop.

Magufuli said: “It is sad to see Tanzanians continue to put on second-hand clothes; we can make our own clothes from our own cotton and export the rest.”

“This will make the country get foreign exchange,” he said, stressing that if elected will put more emphasis on industries, whereby more processing and manufacturing industries will be established.

“It is amazing to learn that Tanzania which grows sisal and cotton to continue importing second-hand clothes … We’re exporting raw cotton to where they make clothes and wear them and later they send us the used clothes to … this won’t be tolerated in my government,” Dr Magufuli said.Dr Magufuli, who is Works minister suggested the need for Tanzanians to change their mindsets and put more emphasis on the locally-made products.

He also pledged that his government will ensure that pesticides and other agro-inputs are timely available in an effort to improve the sector.

“This will encourage more people to venture into cotton farming compared to the current situation,” the CCM presidential aspirant said.

He also pledged to build livestock and fish processing industries, so that livestock keepers and fishermen benefit out their activities.

“When I was the Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, fish landings increased in number as since I fought illegal use of fishing gear … and when I get into power I’ll ensure the two sub-sectors grow,” he said.

Addressing a mammoth rally at Ngudu grounds in Kwimba District, Magufuli said his ministers will be people’s servants and not masters.

He said his government will reduce prices of building materials so that people can be able to live in decent houses.

“I will not come here and deceive you as some people do, but I can assure you all that prices of construction materials will come down once I get into the office,” he said.
