Tanzanians look at their new leader Dr John Magufuli, momentsafter he was inaugurantedas fifth Union presidenton November5.They haveplaced hugetrust in him to deliver and change their lives.
Dar es Salaam. The fifth government will succeed to fulfill its promises and bring about positive changes to the people if President John Magufuli appoints competent and self-motivated cabinet ministers, political analysts, academicians, activists and head of various institutions have said.
They said Tanzanians are eagerly awaiting the changes promised during election campaigns.
However, they said the size and composition of President Magufuli’s cabinet will give a clear direction on whether he will deliver.
University of Dar es Salaam Lecturer Benson Bana said wananchi were expecting a lot from the fifth-phase government, but every Tanzanian must work hard and give support for it to deliver. The don added that Dr Magufuli must be keen on appointing cabinet ministers to avoid carrying liabilities instead of assets.
“Dr Magufuli must appoint people who can really help him to move forward. We need ministers who can supervise and give proper directives to their subordinates. We don’t need liabilities to fail the system,” he said.
Ruaha University College’s (Ruco) Prof Gaudence Mpangala said, Tanzanians expect the government to work along lines of its promises. He said people want employment, water supply, reliable electricity, better health services and reduce bureaucracies as well as to get rid of corruption.
“Dr Magufuli made many promises during his campaigns all over the country, wananchi elected him because of his good record and good promises, therefore their expectation is to see the government implementing such promises,” he said.
He said, the new government must comprise a small but strong cabinet that will cut down cost and deliver at high standard.
“It is obvious that foreign countries that support us have been surprised by the big number of ministers and the way we spend their money, our ministers drive expensive cars and they always fly abroad, we expect a lot of changes in Dr Magufuli’s government,” said the don.
Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) Director of Policy and Research, Mr Hussein Kamote, said majority of Tanzanians were impressed by the President Magufuli’s intention to revive and improve industries in the country.
“It is obvious that there could be no development or strong economy without industries, the Head of State had promised to improve industries during election campaigns, we expect him to fulfill his promises,” he said.
According to Mr Kamote, the industrial sector has been facing many challenges that could be resolved even without allocating budget.
He said “There are many regulatory bodies in this sector, which at the end of the day affect our operations, there are so many bureaucracies, which in one way or another become obstacles to the development of the sector in the country,”
He said members of CTI expect the Head of State to come up with immediate solution to the problem so that there could be conducive environment for the sector to prosper.
He added that the Head of State must come up with a strategy to control the importation of fake and substandard products so that there could fair competition of products in the market.
“There are many things that face the industrial sector, the importation of fake and substandard products, smuggling of products and bureaucracies at the port, all these affect Tanzania procucers, we expect the new government to end these problems,” he said.
University of Dodoma Lecturer, Mr Paul Loisulie said the formation of the cabinet and its composition will give a clear direction of where President Magufuli’s government is heading.
“It is obvious that our expectations will be high or will fade after seeing the list of Ministers and Prime Minister, these are people who support the Head of State to execute his duties, thus if he appoints weak cabinet, it is obvious his government won’t meet our expectation and vice versa,” he said.
He said wananchi expect a government that will be composed of competent, trustful and self-motivated officials.
Trade Unions Congress of Tanzania (Tucta) Secretary General Nicholas Mgaya said workers wanted a President who can bring changes and improve their welfare.
He said Dr Magufuli is expected to address workers problems by raising their salaries, reduce tax to single digit and improve working environments.
