Minister of Energy and Minerals Sospeter Muhongo has directed Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) to find ways to lower power tariffs.
He also ordered zonal managers to visit all power generation plants across the country and assess their power production capacity.
Minister Muhongo issued the directives this week at a meeting with the journalists and the regional managers at the Mtera dam, where he emphasized the need to affirm production capacities and address challenges.
The minister also ordered the Tanesco leadership to respond to queries raised by citizen over frequent power cuts and to detail strategies to address the problem.
Muhongo said Tanesco leaders must ensure that Luku metres are installed for all customers who apply for the service and to connect power to all people whose areas don’t need electric poles by January 15 next year.
On collection of bills, Minister Muhongo said the managers should augment their efforts to boost revenue collection. He called upon them to cooperate with division, district and regional leaders to realise the goal.
However some of the Tanesco managers were of the view that the minister has given them ‘political directives’ because according to them, the situation on the ground is different.
"The directives by the minister are political because the company’s infrastructures are not good enough to achieve his directives…we shall implement to our capacity,” said one of the managers who opted for anonymity.
