ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Mkadam Khamis Mkadam has said that police have stepped up security across Zanzibar, following the scattering of leaflets that carry hate messages.
“Zanzibar is peaceful and people continue with their normal lives. Unfortunately some people have published leaflets, with the aim of destabilizing the town. We cannot ignore the leaflets and we have stepped up security by deploying more police officers,” said Mr Mkadam.
Mr Mkadam, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Urban/West Region, asked the press to avoid publishing the real wording on the leaflets as it may scare people as preparations for fresh elections progress. He said the leaflets were found in different places of Zanzibar Town after the ‘Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chairman, Mr Jecha Salim Jecha, announced March 20, this year as the date for new elections following the nullification of the October 25, 2015 polls due to irregularities.
“We are determined to make sure Zanzibar town remains peaceful before, during and after the fresh elections. We ask every resident here, to take a role in maintaining peace and stability because it is crucial for our development,” said Mr Mkadam.
The RPC also said here that police officers on patrol were yesterday prompted to use force to disperse youths who were throwing stones, protesting the arrest of their colleague who has been suspected of possessing illicit drugs, at Kundemba Street, a famous area for the drugs business.
