Works, Transport and Communications minister Prof Makame Mbarawa has appointed George Sambali as the acting Director General of the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA).
This follows the death of former TAA Director General Suleiman Suleiman, who died a week ago while swimming in the Indian Ocean at Magogoni Creek in Dar es Salaam.
He died on January 18, 2016 while admitted at the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam after being tiring out while swimming in the Indian Ocean.
Sambali was managing director of Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).
Announcing the appointment on behalf of Minister Mbarawa before the TAA staff, ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Leonard Chamuliho, said Sambali’s appointment started officially on January 20, 2016.
Sambali was born in 1965 in Tabora Region and he holds a Masters Degree in Science - Transport and Highway Engineering (MSc Transportation & Road Engineering), obtained between 1999 and 2001 in the Netherlands.He graduated his First Degree (BSc. Civil Engineering) at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in 1995.
He also received training and various aviation courses from local and international colleges such as Certificate in Airport Executive Leadership) in 2014 in Montreal, Canada.
In 2015 he was also awarded a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Airports Professionals (AIP) under AMPAP in Canada.
Sambali was employed by TAA in 2001 as Manager Design, Planning and Evaluation and in 2012 was appointed as Acting Director of Engineering and Technical Services.
In 2013, he was appointed special advisor to the Director General before the end of last year’s re-appointment as acting director of the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).
He is also a member of professional associations including the Airports Council International (ACI) - the only trade representative of the world’s airports.
Sambali is also a member of the Institute of Engineers Tanzania (IET), Member of the International Forum for Rural Transport Operations (IFRTD) and the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).
