Crime decreasing in Z'bar, says minister

Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Hamad Masauni
INCIDENTS of crime in Zanzibar have reportedly been decreasing as the country prepares for the re-run of the General Elections next month, the government has stated.

Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Hamad Masauni said the number of criminal cases reported at police stations in the Isles in 2015 was 1,673 compared to 3,227 reported in 2014.

“It is not right to say that crime is high in the Isles as some people are trying to suggest. Authorities are well prepared to contain criminal activities in the country” he said.

The deputy minister was responding to a question by Malindi MP, Ally Saleh Ally (CUF) who alleged that there are increased cases of criminal incidents in Unguja Magharibi and Mjini districts.

He alleged that unknown people have been attacking and injuring residents in the area and destroying property while threatening residents of even more serious assaults.

The legislator added that the unknown people who cover their faces and are commonly known as “Mazombi” are believed to be government agents bent on scaring opposition politicians. However, the deputy minister said the police would investigate the matter.
“The government cannot use such tactics and people, and let me state here that the police will seriously look into the allegations for further action,” he said.

In his question, the Malindi MP had wanted the government to assure the people of Unguja of their safety as the unknown individuals continue to terrorise them.

The deputy minister assured the House that authorities in the Isles are well equipped to deal with all kinds of criminal activities and that matter would be taken care of.

Late last year there were reports of people who hide their faces with masks and threatened to destroy businesses and a mosque at Mozambique area in Unguja.
