- The man was alone in the car at the time of the crash and was not under the influence of any substance.
It was a miraculous escape for a 44-year-old driver of a BMW who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and went off the tarmac, flying 23 feet into the air before crashing through a tunnel, reports Metro.uk.
The horrifying accident was captured on CCTV outside the Borik tunnel, Poprad, north-east Slovakia.
The crash happened in the wee hours on December 20 when the unnamed driver is said to have had a 'micro-sleep' causing him to veer off the road.
The footage released by Slovak Republic Police, shows the BMW mounting a ramp on the road shoulder, launching the car into air and hitting the tunnel roof. The car then flips upside down and smashes onto the road. The footage shows another car behind slowing down and putting its hazard lights on, as the BMW wreckage lay inside the tunnel.Slovak Police spokesperson David Puchovsky said, "Shortly before 5:00 am on Thursday a BMW passenger was involved in a car accident in front of the Börik tunnel in east Slovakia. The 44-year old driver, who comes from the Bardejov city, did not suffer any injuries, maybe only bruises, but not even breaks."
Police confirmed the man was alone in the car at the time of the crash and was not under the influence of any substance. "An alcohol test had a negative results. It seems he suffered a micro-sleep, Puchovsky added. It is not yet known whether the man is expected to face charges.
Micro-sleep is a brief episode of sleep lasting anywhere from a fraction of a second up to 30 seconds and tend to occur when an individual is trying to fight sleep and remain awake. In a 2014 road safety charity Brake revealed after a survey of 1,000 drivers that 22 per cent of women and 45 per cent of men admitted to micro-sleeping while driving.
