Uganda to build US $1.4bn hydropower plant on the Nile!

A Chinese firm has applied for a license in Uganda to develop a US $1.4bn hydropower plant that could potentially expand the country’s generation capacity by 40%. Mr. Julius Wandera, spokesperson for State-run power regulator, Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) disclosed that the authority has already called for comments from the public on the proposed project.

According to its license application, the firm, POWERCHINA International Group Limited (PIGL), wants to develop the Ayago Hydroelectric Power Station, located on a section of River Nile between the lakes Kyoga and Albert. ERA licences all power generators in the country and is also responsible for setting generation and end-user power tariffs. The Ayago power plant will have a capacity of 840MW and, when successfully developed, would be Uganda’s largest power plant.

Coronavirus: Everything you need to know about the Covid-19 Wuhan virus outbreak!

Can you treat it? Can it spread from one person to another? All your questions are answered here.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread to several countries in over three months, and left more than 1,500 dead and over 70,000 infected. With so many questions and myths surrounding this virus, here are all the details you need to know.

1. What is a coronavirus?
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are found in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Animal coronaviruses can infect people and spread between people. In recent years there has been an outbreak of an animal coronaviruses that have infected humans such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Coronaviruses (CoV) cause illness ranging from the common cold, diarrhoea and more severe illnesses.

China's death toll reached 2,663 on Tuesday, after 71 more people died.

The new coronavirus has peaked in China but could still grow into a pandemic, the World Health Organization has warned, as infections mushroom in other countries.

Financial markets have gone into a tailspin after grim news of deaths and outbreaks in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, even as the Chinese epicentre appeared to be calming, with the death toll at its lowest for three weeks.

But the situation is worsening in other countries, with more than 2,000 cases and 30 deaths reported abroad, prompting a raft of restrictions on travellers from infected nations.

Gold price hits 7-year high, jumps over 2.5%!

The coronavirus outbreak is likely to send it higher.

Gold prices surged more than 2.5 per cent to $1,688 on Monday evening, hitting over seven-year highs as investors rushed to safe haven buying.

Goldman has predicted that gold is headed towards $1,750/oz while Citi has said it could reach $2,000/oz within the next 12 to 24 months.

"The (Covid-19 coronavirus) virus outbreak is likely to send it higher as it is difficult to see what at this stage can halt or pause the rally perhaps apart from its own success," said Ole Hansen, head of commodities strategy at Saxo Bank.

In the UAE, Dubai Financial Market fell 0.8 per cent while Abu Dhabi lost 2.2 per cent.

The number of fatalities in China — where the virus emerged late last year — also continued to soar, with 150 more confirmed deaths, taking its official death toll to
nearly 2,600.
Chinese authorities insist they are making progress in containing the virus, citing slowing infection rates thanks to unprecedented travel lockdowns and quarantines in or near the outbreak’s epicentre.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Mahathir Mohamad unexpectedly resigned as prime minister on Monday, leaving the Southeast Asian nation in political turmoil, but the country’s monarch asked him to stay on as interim premier until a successor is appointed.

MUSCAT: In the first cases of coronavirus in the Sultanate, two persons have been tested positive on Monday. According to a televised statement by the Ministry of Health, two Omani women have been tested, and were found to have been infected with the virus. Without naming the patients, the statement said, “they are in a stable condition at their respective homes and are under observation”. The ministry called upon all citizens and residents coming from countries which are affected by the coronavirus to stay at home and undergo infection control procedures.

TEL AVIV/BEIRUT/GAZA CITY: Israel’s air force struck fighter targets in the Gaza Strip shortly on Monday, hours after overnight airstrikes against the Palestinian group in Syria left six fighters dead.
The latest airstrikes came after a fresh barrage of 14 rockets fired from Gaza at southern Israel, of which the country’s Iron Dome aerial defence system intercepted 12, a military statement said.
Sirens sounded in the town of Sderot, adjacent to the north-east of the Gaza Strip, and elsewhere in southern Israel amid the fresh barrage.

NEW DELHI: India and the United States will expand their strategic partnership with cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and multi-billion dollar defence deals, President Donald Trump announced on Monday, moves seen as counterbalancing China’s rise in Asia.

JUBA: South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar was sworn-in as first Vice-President on Saturday, formally rejoining the government in the latest bid to bring peace to a nation ravaged by war.
It is the third time that bitter foes Machar and President Salva Kiir will attempt to rule together and the pair have many differences yet to iron out as they form the unity government that is a cornerstone of a September 2018 peace deal.
“For the people of South Sudan, I want to assure you that we will work together to end your suffering,” Machar said after taking the oath.

The curious ability of the African turquoise killifish to press pause on its development could have intriguing implications for human ageing, say researchers.

Certain creatures, including the killifish, can put themselves into suspended animation as an embryo – a trait known as diapause. The phenomenon is thought to have evolved in response to pressures such as seasonal changes in the environment – for example ponds drying up – or sudden challenges that pose a risk to the creatures. In other words, diapause allows the animal to put its development or birth on ice until conditions improve.

KABUL/WASHINGTON/PESHAWAR: The United States and the Taliban will sign an agreement on February 29 at the end of a week-long period of violence reduction in Afghanistan, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Taliban said on Friday.
The agreement could represent a chance for peace after 18 years of war and a US troop presence that dates back to 2001, as well as boosting US President Donald Trump’s hopes of pulling US forces out of Afghanistan.
However, past attempts at negotiating peace agreements have been scuttled by Taliban attacks on international forces.
The reduced violence period, to be observed by Afghan, international and Taliban forces, will begin at midnight (1930 GMT), an Afghan official and Taliban leaders said.

Call it bizarre but Facebook CEO is so consumed by his public image that he has a dedicated staff that "blow dry his armpits' before he makes an appearance on stage to address the audience.

According to "Facebook: the Inside Story," an upcoming book writted by Wired's Steven Levy, Zuckerberg is apparently obsessed with his public appearance.

"A communications exec is shown blow-drying the CEO's armpits before speaking appearances to eliminate anxiety sweat," claimed the book.

US slaps sanctions on Iranian officials for barring candidates!

The United States on Thursday slapped sanctions on five Iranian officials in charge of vetting candidates for this week's parliamentary elections, in which thousands have been barred from running.

The targeted officials include Ahmad Jannati, a powerful cleric accused of overseeing the disqualification of candidates as part of the Guardian Council. He also plays a key role in a body that selects the regime's supreme leader.

Tanzania has launched a US $350m solar powered water supply project that will alleviate the suffering of Makang’wa Village residents in Chamwino. The residents have lived without proper water services for over 50 years.

Implemented by the Dodoma Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (Duwasa), the project will benefit over 7,000 households in Makang’wa Village and neighbouring villages in Chamwino. Duwasa Managing Director David Pallangyo said the authority started implementing the project on September 19, 2019, saying the project had to be completed in two months but the timeframe had to be extended by 30 days due to arrival delays of solar panels and a water pump from abroad.
