MUSCAT, DEC 2 – Oman has announced plans to offer six new oil and gas blocks for investment as part of the 2019 Licensing Round due to be unveiled in the first quarter of next year. The new blocks — distributed across the play fairway onshore Oman — underscore sustained investor confidence in the Sultanate’s upstream energy sector, according to a high-level official of the Ministry of Oil and Gas. Dr Saleh al Anboori (pictured), Director-General of Planning and Studies, identified the new acreage on offer as Blocks 70, 73, 74, 75, 76 and 58.

The official made the announcement during the opening session of the 2nd OPAL Oil & Gas Conference at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre here yesterday. Speaking on the theme, ‘Investing in Oman’s Oil & Gas Industry’, he said the six blocks represent new acreage that is surrounded by existing oil and gas fields.

Neil deGrasse Tyson has finally come forward to address the sexual misconduct accusations that came to light in the last couple of days. In a lengthy Facebook post, he said his piece and went through the accusations in detail, giving his side of the story.

“I’ve recently been publicly accused of sexual misconduct,” he wrote in the post. “These accusations have received a fair amount of press in the past forty-eight hours, unaccompanied by my reactions. In many cases, it’s not the media’s fault. I declined comment on the grounds that serious accusations should not be adjudicated in the press. But clearly I cannot continue to stay silent.”

The famous astrophysicist/TV personality has been accused by two more women of sexual misconduct, bringing the total number of women who have come forward to three. In light of the new allegations, the networks, Fox and Nat Geo, and producers behind the Emmy-winning Cosmos reboot on Friday announced that they would investigate the claims. In his post today, Tyson said that he welcomes an independent investigation.

MIT engineers fly first-ever silent plane with no moving parts!

Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have, in a breakthrough, built and flown the first-ever silent airplane with no moving propellers or jet turbines. Since the Wright Brothers launched the first airplane over 100 years ago, every aircraft has flown with the help of moving parts such as propellers, turbine blades, and fans, which are powered by the combustion of fossil fuels or by battery packs that produce a persistent, whining buzz. But, the new light aircraft, inspired from the movie and television series “Star Trek”, carries neither propellers or turbines, nor it depends on fossil fuels to fly.

Chinese company unveils first satellite for free WiFi!

A Chinese company has unveiled the first satellite in a constellation plan to provide free WiFi service worldwide.
According to the company, LinkSure Network, the satellite will be launched from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China’s Gansu province next year and by 2020 there will be 10 satellites in space.
The constellation will have 272 satellites by 2026.
People can use their mobile phones to search for Internet services provided by the constellation and browse the Internet even in regions that telecom networks do not cover, said a report in People’s Daily.

Another UK govt minister quits over Brexit deal!

LONDON: British government minister Sam Gyimah (pictured) quit late on Friday over Prime Minister Theresa May’s “naive” Brexit plan, dealing her another blow in her fight to pass it through parliament.
The universities and science minister is the seventh member of May’s government to quit since she brought back the draft Withdrawal Agreement from Brussels.
Gyimah, who voted to remain in the EU, said the deal was “not in the British national interest” and that voting for it would set Britain “up for failure”.
“Britain will end up worse off, transformed from rule makers into rule takers,” he wrote on Facebook.
“It is a democratic deficit and a loss of sovereignty the public will rightly never accept,” he added.

Labour threatens PM May with new Brexit hurdle!

LONDON: Britain’s main opposition Labour Party said on Sunday it would press for contempt proceedings against the government if Prime Minister Theresa May fails to produce the full legal advice she has received on her Brexit deal.
The threat is yet another hurdle May must clear before parliament votes on December 11 on her deal for Britain’s exit from the European Union, its biggest shift in foreign and trade policy for more than 40 years.
With the odds looking stacked against her, May is touring the country and media studios to try to win over critics including both euro sceptics and europhiles who say the deal will leave Britain a diminished state, still linked economically to the EU but no longer with a say over the rules.

Macron mulls imposing state of emergency after worst unrest!

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron considered declaring a state of emergency as he met security chiefs on Sunday seeking a way out of nationwide protests after rioters turned central Paris into a battle zone and vandalised the Arc de Triomphe monument.
Macron met with the prime minister, interior minister and top security service officials at the presidential palace in Paris after flying in from the G20 summit in Argentina.
Paris police said 412 people were arrested during the worst clashes for years in the capital and 378 were still in custody. A total of 133 had been injured, including 23 members of the security forces who battled rioters.
“I will never accept violence,” Macron told a news conference in Buenos Aires before flying home.
“No cause justifies that authorities are attacked, that businesses are plundered, that passers-by or journalists are threatened or that the Arc du Triomphe is defiled,” he said.

Archaeologists in Algeria have discovered stone tools and cut animal bones that may be up to 2.4 million years old, bringing into question East Africa’s title as the cradle of humanity, according to research published on Thursday in the journal Science.
The artifacts — more ancient than those discovered in the region until now — were found in Setif, some 200 miles (300 kilometres) east of Algiers, by a team of international researchers, including Algerians.
The tools closely resemble those called Oldowan, found until now mainly in East Africa.
The tools were unearthed near dozens of fossilised animal bones which contained cut marks, as if relics of prehistoric butchers.

More than a dozen were higher than magnitude 4.

More than 230 aftershocks have hit parts of Alaska since Friday, when a massive 7.0-magnitude quake knocked out power, ripped open roads and damaged buildings near Anchorage, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Most of the smaller earthquakes since Friday's big one were not felt. More than a dozen were higher than magnitude 4 and a handful greater than magnitude 5.

But a magnitude-5.2 aftershock at about 11 p.m. on Friday was the second-biggest event since a magnitude-5.7 temblor hit minutes after the main quake earlier in the day, a USGS official told CNN on Saturday.

Wanted Indian preacher says he has not broken any law!

He faces charges of money laundering and hate speech.

Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, wanted in his home country of India, said he has not broken any Indian law and was being targeted by the "enemies of Islam," in a rare public speech in Malaysia where he has sought refuge.

Naik, 53, is facing charges of money laundering and hate speech in India, where authorities last year said he has been "promoting enmity and hatred between different religious groups in India through public speeches and lectures".

The preacher has been living in Malaysia, where he has permanent residency, since India started investigating him, but he has kept a low profile over the past year amid criticism that he is a threat to peace in multi-ethnic Malaysia.

Over the past month, Tanzanian politics has been making international headlines. Journalists representing the Committee to Protect Journalists were detained in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial capital. The government expelled pregnant girls from school. Paul Makonda, the regional commissioner for Dar, announced plans to round up LGBT people. Eventually, the rest of the government distanced itself from Makonda, but the damage was done. Donors have withdrawnaid. The European Union and the United States condemned these human rights abuses.

What’s going on? Since 1961, Tanzania has been ruled by the same party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). While it has never been a democracy, Tanzania had been better known as a safari tourism destination and as a donor darling. How have things become so repressive so quickly?

On the outskirts of Kuwait City, the love Kuwaitis have for former US President George H.W. Bush could be seen in 2016 on a billboard one Bedouin family put up to announce their son's wedding.

That son being Bush Al Widhan, born in the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War that saw US-led forces expel the occupying Iraqi troops of dictator Saddam Hussein.

"He was a real man, a lion," said Mubarak Al Widhan, the father of the Kuwaiti Bush, of the American president. "He stood for our right for freedom, and he gave us back our country."

With Bush's death, his legacy across the Middle East takes root in that 100-hour ground war that routed Iraqi forces. That war gave birth to the network of military bases America now operates across the Arabian Gulf supporting troops in Afghanistan and forces fighting against the Daesh group in Iraq and Syria.

However, Bush ultimately would leave the insurgents he urged to rise up against Saddam in 1991 to face the dictator's wrath alone, leading to thousands of deaths. That mixed picture only extends to the presidency of his son, George W. Bush, who ordered the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq that overthrew Saddam, whom he once famously described as "the guy who tried to kill my dad one time."

George H.W. Bush - the upper-crust war hero-turned-oilman and diplomat who steered America through the end of the Cold War as president and led a political dynasty that saw his son win the White House - died Friday. He was 94.

The 41st American president was a foreign policy realist who navigated the turbulent but largely peaceful fall of the Soviet Union in 1989 and assembled an unprecedented coalition to defeat Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein two years later.

But the decorated war pilot and former CIA chief suffered the ignominy of being a one-term president, denied a second term over a weak economy when he lost the 1992 election to upstart Democrat Bill Clinton.

His favouring of stability and international consensus stands in sharp contrast to the provocative bluster of fellow Republican and current White House occupant Donald Trump, a man whom Bush did not vote for in 2016.

Bush presided over economic malaise at home, and infuriated his fellow Republicans during a budget battle with rival Democrats by famously breaking his vow: "Read my Lips: No new taxes."
