Zanzibar record inflation decline in January

RESIDENTS in Zanzibar will be happy to learn that there was a decline in inflation in the past month, as the Office of Chief Government Statistician (OCGS-Zanzibar) anticipates further drop in the coming months.

Unveiling monthly ‘Consumer Price Index (CPI)’ to the media here, Mr Abdul Ramadhan Abeid, Director of economical statistics, said inflation dropped to 9.7 per cent in January from 11.7 per cent recorded in December last year.

“In January the prices on food commodities fell to 11.8 per cent from 18.1 per cent in the previous month,” said Mr Abeid. However he said the price for non-food items increased from 5.2 per cent in December to 6.8 per cent in January.

Flanked by Mr Evarist Mgangaluma from the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) - Zanzibar Branch, Mr Abeid said at least 269 commodities were monitored to have the CPI, as he asked citizens to work hard to increase home production, mainly farm produce to minimize inflation.

After the October 25, 2015 elections, inflation shot up, sparking complaints from residents.

The problem was linked to a drop in production and import of foods from abroad caused by political impasse in the islands following the nullification of the general elections.
