Thu Dec 20, 2012After the recent Sandy Hook Elementary School
shooting in Connecticut, several states are considering
extreme measures such as arming schools staffs.
After last Friday’s shooting, which killed 20 first graders and six educators, Oklahoma, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, Oregon, and Virginia are mulling over imposing laws allowing school staff to carry weapons.
The Governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell has stated he would approve teachers carrying guns as a measure “to stop aggressors coming into the schools.”
A representative of the state of Oklahoma is working on a bill that would allow teachers and administrators to carry guns at school and during school events.
Gun control advocate, Dan Gross believes focusing on arming teachers creates distraction from the “real things” such as why 270 Americans are shot, including 32, who are murdered by guns, every day.
The US has experienced several mass killings this year, including the Colorado cinema shooting in July, which left 12 people dead and 59 others injured.
