Zanzibar govt revokes system of hiring retirees

BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

19th June 2013

Haji Omar Kheir, Minister for Public Services and Good governance
The Zanzibar government has revoked the system of employing retired workers on contractual basis save for posts which need special experts.

The Minister of State, President’s Office Public Service and Good Governance Haji Omar Kheir made the revelation here yesterday when responding to a question by Viwe Khamis Abdalla (Special Seats) in the ongoing Members of the House of Representatives session.

The government has embarked on this grand measure since the start of the ending financial year by taking into account the Public Service Act Number 2 of 2011 and its amendments in order to increase employmentto professionals in the Isles, he said.

Minister Kheir said that the Public Service Act gives the minister the mandate to employ retired professionals on contractual basis if there is a shortage of experts and there are no people to employ for the respective field.

He said since the system was revoked it has helped to reduce the number of people employed on contract terms and increased employment to the youth in different professions.

The Minister said that since 2011 to this year a total of 28 retirees were employed on contract basis whereby this year the government plans to provide 2,552 jobs in various sectors within the Isles.

In his basic question Viwe Khamis Abdalla had wanted to know when the government will stop employing retired workers on contractual basis saying there were many unemployed youths in different professions on the streets.
