Isles’ DP presidential candidate fails to collect forms

THE Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate for Zanzibar in this year’s general election, Mr Abdalla Kombo, failed to collect the nomination forms yesterday.

According to the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) timetable, Mr Kombo was supposed to collect nomination forms yesterday at 10 am, but kept people including journalists waiting and never turned up, prompting the cancellation of the event. When contacted, he apologised, saying his mother was seriously sick.

“I had to fly to Pemba, planning to be back in time to collect the nomination forms. But I missed the first flight from Pemba to Unguja. I apologize for the inconvenience caused by my absence.

ZEC has re-arranged. I will collect the forms tomorrow,” he said. Meanwhile, Mr Hamad Rashid Mohammed and Mr Mohammed Masoud Rashid collected nomination forms yesterday from Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) to contest for Isles’ presidency in October Polls should the electoral body approve them.

Mr Mohammed would be the flag barrier for the Alliance for Democratic Change (ADC), while Mr Rashid is the likely candidate for Chama cha Ukombozi wa Umma (CHAUMMA).

ZEC Chairman Mr Jecha Salim Jecha handed over to them a bag containing the nomination forms. “Adhere to the electoral laws and the codes of conduct,” Mr Jecha appealed to the candidates.

Mr Mohammed who was Wawi MP in Pemba said Zanzibar needs changes in its education system, including the Quran schools. “I am prepared to bring the changes should Zanzibaris vote for me,” he said, asking people to trust him.
