JK to inaugurate Mtwara gas pipeline

To chair 8th National Business Council meeting in Dar

President Jakaya Kikwete
President Jakaya Kikwete is expected to inaugurate the natural gas flow project following completion of the gas pipeline from Madimba in Mtwara to Kinyerezi in Dar es Salaam.
Making the announcement over the weekend at a media training organised by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) to farmilarise journalists with the extractive industry, Engineer Felix Nanguka from the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) said the president will lead the inauguration on September 8.
The government officially launched construction of the 532 km gas pipeline back in July 2012 with a  33-year concessional loan of $1.225bn from Exim Bank of China.
The project was implemented by the China Petroleum Technology and Development Corporation (CPTDC) in collaboration with the China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Corporation (CPPEC).
It involved construction of the 24-36 inches diameter pipeline from Mnazi Bay in Mtwara to Kinyerezi in Dar es Salaam via Somanga Fungu where there is already a spur line from the Songo Songo gas field in Lindi Region.
Three Chinese firms, China Petroleum Engineers, China Chemical Engineering Secondary Construction Corporation and Worley Parson are currently constructing a natural gas processing plants at Madimba in the region.
The construction did go without hurdles, towards the end of 2012 and the first half of 2013, Mtwara residents clashed with the police force because of this project demanding to know how it would benefit them.
In a related development, the president is also expected to chair the 8th Tanzania National Business Council (TNBC) meeting in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday whose theme is: ‘Enhancing Business Environment for Sustainable Growth.’
In a press statement issued to the media yesterday, the TNBC Executive Secretary, Eng. Raymond Mbilinyi, said the discussions will focus on improving the business environment.
He said it would also discuss the tourism sector’s transformation to become competitive regionally and globally.
Eng Mbilinyi said the meeting would also be used as an opportunity for the business community to bid farewell to Dr Kikwete, as the TNBC Chairman.
Mbilinyi said they would be doing so to appreciate the President’s committed leadership towards the private sector’s development in Tanzania.
He explained that; "everyone of you will agree with me that Dr Kikwete has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the private sector in Tanzania.
“This crucial meeting will attract ministers, permanent secretaries and business leaders to deliberate on issues related to improving national competitiveness and economic prosperity.”
Explaining that preparations for the meeting were complete, Eng Mbilinyi said, among other events, as the TNBC chairman, President Kikwete will receive two task force reports. One will be on improving the business environment and tourism transformation in Tanzania, he said.
He said the meeting will also place emphasis on maintaining a competitive business environment to attract private investment.
He stressed: “Poverty alleviation as well as reducing administrative costs of doing business for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are vital in efforts to facilitate rapid job creation and a private sector-led economy.”
TNBC is a platform that provides strategic forum for public and private sector leaders to deliberate on issues of promoting economic growth.
It also provides opportunities for members to exchange views on improving the business environment to enhance national economic competitiveness in the long run.
