Zanzibar ballot papers arrive!

WITH only a week before Tanzanians go to the polls, 'Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC), has received a consignment of ballot papers that will be used during the election on October 25.

The consignment of ballot papers printed in South Africa was brought here on Friday and is now kept under tight security before distribution on the eve of the polling day.

Stakeholders in the election who included representatives from political parties, media personnel, police officers and government operatives witnessed the offloading of the ballot papers. Fourteen political parties are participating in the much-awaited election.

The electorates in Zanzibar will also vote for Union presidency and members of the Union Parliament, therefore each voter in the Islands will have five votes to cast. Officers from the CUF led by Mr Eddy Riamy and Mr Abubakar Hamad from Jahazi Asilia party expressed concern over the safety of the ballot papers, saying some of them might be stolen.
"We need to be assured of the safety of the ballot papers," Mr Riamy said as Mr Salmin Senga, the chairman of the 'election material organising committee' from ZEC, asked CUF and other stakeholders not to get worried about the safety of the papers.

"The ballot papers are in safe hands. They will be under the guard of armed TPDF soldiers until polling day. Have trust in ZEC," Mr Senga said at the 'Abeid Aman Karume International Airport (AAKIA) where the ballots were received.
