POLICE in Dar es Salaam have launched a massive crackdown to nab motorcyclists involved in the city’s escalating crime rates.
Police say they have been receiving increasingly more reports of organized motorcycle gangs operating in Dar es Salaam and elsewhere in the country who target clients and staff of banks and other financial institutions.
Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander Simon Sirro said; “since Tuesday when we started the operation we have managed to impound 600 motorcyclists across Dar es Salaam...in Temeke Municipality we impounded more than 130 motorcycles, 241 in Kinondoni and 249 others were in Ilala.”
He said the operation was meant to know legal owners of the motorcycles citing that many of them are stolen and have being used for crime.
He also revealed that police has information of bank staff working with the criminals and advised citizens to stop carrying huge amounts of money. He said police will deploy detectives at all major financial institutions to keep an eye on activities within and outside banks.
“We will continue with this operation to ensure we protect customers and bring the criminals to justice,” he said.
